Kathryn Patton/ Smashing Cleveland, OH• Silver & Enamel

My first memory of making jewelry involved brightly colored scraps of fabric, woven and tied around my ankle. My parents really loved that look. No, they didn't. I was just kidding. They said I looked like a hobo, but I thought I looked fabulous and wore the thing all summer. Oh! I should mention that was when I was eight years old.

My first memory of metalwork is from college. Our first project was making a simple band ring out of copper. I remember being ridiculously excited thinking that if I could make a ring, I could probably figure out how to make anything.

What is it that draws you to sometimes the forgotten sustainability is durability. Thoughtfully designing and creating things that last and that could someday be repaired is my way of being green. This is why I use sterling silver and glass. These materials age so beautifully and there will always be a glassmaker or a silversmith (at least, i hope!) in the future to fix things. I treasure old jewelry from my family, and I really hope the things I make now will be treasured by someone long after I'm gone.
