Kyle Kreigh • LaFarge, WI • Hand Thrown Porcelain

I was born in the river bluff country of central Missouri, graduated from the University of Chicago in 1972, took graduate degrees in engineering and geophysics at the University of Florida and Colorado School of Mines, worked for many years on the offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, and eventually decided to take up pottery full time.

I work almost exclusively in porcelain, attracted early on to its clarity of line and interaction with light. I particularly admire the oriental pottery traditions with their pure forms and delicate celadon and copper red glazes. I am also intrigued with crystalline glazes in which patterns form like frost on a window.

On a larger scale, I am interested in creating “art to live with” and have specialized in handmade tile installations and bathroom ensembles featuring hand thrown porcelain sinks.

Pottery is one of these things people keep digging up. For me it has been a late and last love, and I hope there is to be found in these pieces a certain degree of affirmation.
