Regardless of the medium or subject each workshares a common focus: value, texture and contrast. Whether the works are representational or non-representational, these three characteristics are central to the work. I am always attracted to subjects that present the possibility to explore these 3 elements. Likewise when I approach a non-representational piece or digital montage, these elements are the first to manifest themselves in the concept.

Whether the medium is watercolor; digital, or monochrome, the process of creating the work involves applying many layers to create an image. In digital montages and watercolor, 20 to 30 layers are not uncommon. In monochrome works, graphite, carbon and charcoal, the process of layering involves applying, smearing, erasing, and re-applying until a satisfactory combination of contrast, value and texture are achieved. |
