Denise Greenwood • Baton Rouge, LA • Clay Sculpture

I am a ceramic artist working in medium body low fire white & terra cotta clays. All of my artwork is handbuilt, I do not use molds, slab rollers or extruders. This makes each piece an original.

I do several functional pieces, which are made production style, in that I will do many in one sitting. I finish my art using glazes & underglazes, some are fired multiple times to get the desired look.

I am fascinated with human faces and figures so naturally, this is the focus of my work. I see my style as “post modern mannerism,” in that I stray from a look of realism, and prefer to work just left of it, something bordering on grotesque, yet beautiful.

Art is Life. It affects me on every level, like the long deep sigh of the soul. I can't imagine my life without art, nor would I want to. A soulful mysterious meditation is manifested in the faces and figures I sculpt.

My passion feeds off the art & the art grows up from my passion. It is a brilliant mirror which I hold up to myself & bare all. For me, there is no separation.

Life is art.
