Abigail Robertson • Dubuque, IA • Mixed-Media Painting

My work is exploration in response to situations and relationships and to the emotions connected to them. Through the gradual layering of marks, images and colors the narrative structure that is the foundation of my work begins to take shape, revealing itself to me as it is created.

 

I, like the characters in my paintings and drawings, use various defense mechanisms to combat feelings such as vulnerability, isolation and uncertainty. The whimsical characters in my paintings seem to face their own situations with confidence and humor.
 

It is through the process of creating these characters that I begin to feel a sense of possibility, happiness and satisfaction.

Currently, I live and work in my hometown of Dubuque, Iowa, with my husband, our dog and two cats, who provide plenty of inspiration for new work!
